1. Federalism Explanation:

A system where the states and national government share power.

2. Connection to the constitution:

a.) Section 1, Article 8, Clause 18 is an example of federalism in our constitution. This clause says, “to make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof.” This shows federalism because it discribes the rights of the federal government over the state government in this particular area of power.

b.) Another piece of the constitution that shows federalism is Article 4 section 3. This sections shows the realationship between the federal and state government and the powers they share. This shows federalism because it is agknowlaging the division in our government between the states and federal government.

3. Connection to Dance Moms:

Abby Lee is like the national government because she owns the studio and has supremacy to everyone else. The moms are like the states because they are a part of Abbys studio so they have a right to share their opinions. The moms and Abby share the power over the kids to make decisions concerning the wellbeing of The Abby Lee Dance Company.

4. Current Event: Colorado and Washington have voted to legalize the use of marijuana, but its still illegal under federal laws. Because of this many people have been arrested even though they are obeying state laws. People don’t think its fair.

5. The History of Federalism

1. Dual Federalism (1789–1945)

Dual Federalism is the system of government in the United States for the first 150 years. This form of federalism splits powers into two types of government, state and federal.

2. The Civil War and the Fourteenth Amendment (1861–1868)

The Civil War had a lot to do with federalism. The south wanted each individual state to be able to govern themselves wear the north wished for a more unified nation.

3. Industrialization and Globalization (1865-1945)

In the late 19th century and early 2oth our government changed a lot in industrialization and globalization. We became a much larger industrial country which was helped by a federal government. Also, we transformed into a powerful global economic country which caused the federal government to step in.

4. Cooperative Federalism (1945–1969)

Cooperative federealism is federalism in the last century. This way of government is when the national and state governments mix, this makes it hard to see which powers are held by which group.

5. New Federalism (1969–present)

A form of government in which supporters believe that the national government has become too strong. New Federalist's want to give more power to the states, taking some control away from the national government. President Nixion was a huge supporter of New Federalism and since his presidency all succeding presidents have tried to give different powers to the states.

6. Advantages and Disadvantages of New Federalism

New Federalism is good because it keeps people involved in their government. But, some people are opposed to New Federalism because it creates a large division throughout the states and it is often easeier to have one main power sorce.

7. The Supreme Court and New Federalism

The supreme court has also done it's part in creating New Federalism. They have done this by taking sides with lacal and state governments in various trials.

6. State Vs. National Pros Cons

Federalism

1) United states doesn’t have one policy on issues, but they do have 51 policies, but that confuses people.

1) The state power system gives people more access to leaders and opportunities to get involved in their government.

2) The national cant keep up with all the problems, so giving power to the state and local helps because they are closer to the problem and things can get fixed sooner than later.

3) When the state government has power they can experiment with policies, that lets the federal government learn from their successes. So they learn off of each other.

2) The overlapping of boundaries with national and state governments makes it hard to blame for failed policies.

3) Most americans know nothing about their government to they don’t pay attention to the State and local government even though they have a big part in their lives. And the elections for state and local government often turns out to be 25% less.
