Popular Sovereignty

1. Explanation: Popular sovereignty is that the people have the ultimate say in our government.

2. Connection to the Constitution: Popular Sovereignty connects to the preamble of the Constitution by saying “We the People of the United States....” This means that the people have the ultimate power. Popular Sovreighnty also connects to amendemnt 15 of the Constitution which states that no U.S. citizen will be denied the right to vote, regardless of their race, color, or previous condition.

3. Connection to Dance Moms: Abby Lee Miller is the head rule maker but has to get the moms approval before enforcing the rules. Abby is like the fedral government and the moms are like the people of the U.S.

4. Current Event: I researched an article about how the government is not exercising popular sovereignty by taking away peoples voting privilege, or making some people pay to vote. That is unconstitutional.

5. Popular Sovereignty has not always been like it is today. It first started out with what is called a social contract in the 1600’s. Hobbes , Locke, and Rousseau were major figures in creating that. The original Constitution also limited Popular Sovereignty by letting the people only vote for the House of Representatives. This limits Popular sovereignty because only a small amount of the population could vote. To give the people more power, amendments were added on to the constitution. Amendment 15 and 19 impacted Popular Sovereignty by saying that any U.S. citizen could vote, no matter their race, colour, previous condition(15), or sex (19). Amendment 17 affects Popular Sovereignty because it make the senate now be elected by the people. Amendments 23 and 24 say that anyone is allowed to vote for president, vice president, sennate, or represenatives in congress. Lastly, amendment 26 says that anys U.S. citizen above the age of 18 will not be denied their right to vote. These amenments were all added to the constetutuion to give the people more popular sovreighnty.
